Industrial Hygienist (CIH) - Research & Development Safety

About the role

Amentum is seeking a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) to support its SOS contract at the DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Morgantown, WV. The role works closely with federal and contract researchers, site technicians, engineers and other ES&H professionals, reports to the R&D SARS Supervisor and sits in an interdisciplinary team. It ensures the federal safety review process is fully documented and the final safety review package is assembled and uploaded to the NETL tracking system.

Key responsibilities

• Assess R&D work activities to identify potential health hazards.
• Oversee exposure monitoring programs for hazards such as asbestos, lead, radiation, noise, air quality, ventilation, heat stress, ergonomics and others.
• Develop and maintain industrial hygiene programs including chemical hygiene plans, respiratory protection, hearing conservation and laser safety programs.
• Develop, deliver and present safety and health training (HAZCOM, lab safety, PPE, respirator fit testing, asbestos, lead, chemical-specific training).
• Evaluate the physical, chemical and toxicological properties of chemicals used in R&D.
• Review lab-scale R&D projects for hazards and exposure pathways, and review engineering drawings (plot plans, PFDs, P&IDs) for conformance to ES&H codes and standards.
• Lead and take part in annual safety and compliance assessments, chair hazard identification meetings and prepare hazard analysis reports.
• Work within the Project Management Plan process for new or modified projects, including estimating work and reviewing schedules.

Required profile

• US citizen.
• Bachelor's degree in an ES&H or related field (safety, environmental science, engineering, chemistry, biology); master's degree preferred.
• At least 5 years of relevant experience; CIH certification required.
• Working knowledge of Chemical Hygiene Plans and OSHA Laboratory Standard (29 CFR 1910.1450).
• Ability to meet schedules, milestones and budgetary requirements.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams).
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Understanding of OSHA, NFPA, EPA and ACGIH standards.
• Preferred: experience with formal hazard analysis reviews (HAR) and incident causal analysis in a lab setting, process safety knowledge, BCSP certification, and CIH with 5+ years of lab experience.
