Motor Equipment Mechanic Supervisor (Evening Shift)

About the role

The Motor Equipment Mechanic Supervisor supervises and takes part in the skilled maintenance, diagnosis, inspection and repair of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and public works equipment. The employee plans repair projects, organizes daily work, supervises mechanics and mechanic helpers, performs journey-level repairs, inspects completed work and ensures compliance with safety requirements and the New York State Motor Vehicle Inspection Code. The position is assigned to a later or evening shift, under the general supervision of the Motor Equipment Maintenance Supervisor, with considerable independence in planning and overseeing day-to-day work.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, assign and supervise daily maintenance and repair work, set priorities and review employee work for safety, accuracy and quality
• Supervise mechanics, mechanic helpers and vocational education students, give technical direction and inspect completed repairs before equipment returns to service
• Diagnose and repair engines, ignition, electrical and starting systems, transmissions, power trains, brakes, hydraulics and bodywork, including welding, sandblasting and painting
• Service municipal fleet vehicles such as trucks, buses, police cars, fire apparatus, snowplows and generators, and coordinate repairs with outside vendors
• Support fire apparatus repairs, fabricate and repair snowplow blades and auxiliary winter equipment
• Perform or oversee New York State motor vehicle inspections and keep records, reports and shift handoffs clear

Required profile

• Ability to make routine operational and technical decisions independently and communicate effectively across shifts
• Comfortable working nontraditional hours; staffing on the evening shift may be limited
• A highly experienced senior mechanic meeting the journey-level experience standard may be considered

What we offer

• Pay of about $28.09 per hour in 2026 and $28.93 per hour in 2027, with annual steps under the CSEA DPW Unit collective bargaining agreement
