Immigration Legal Team Intern (Unpaid)

About the role

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading humanitarian organization that supports refugees and immigrants across the United States. As an Immigration Legal Team Intern, you will work directly with IRC immigration attorneys to assist refugees, asylees, and other newcomers in navigating U.S. immigration processes.

Key responsibilities

• Assist immigration staff in preparing adjustment of status, citizenship, and pro‑se asylum applications.
• Draft application documents and maintain clear follow‑up communication with clients.
• Perform clerical and administrative duties to keep client files accurate and up‑to‑date.
• Support data tracking and file management activities.

Required profile

• Based in the United States and enrolled in or recently graduated from a post‑secondary institution (within the last 2 years).
• Minimum 15 hours per week; preference for 35+ hours.
• Undergraduate or graduate studies in social sciences, international relations, law, or a related field.
• Native Spanish speaker; additional languages such as French, Dari/Pashto, or Arabic are a plus.
• Strong desire to help immigrants in New York and ability to work independently with high attention to detail.

Required skills

• Competency in Microsoft Office.

• Ability to manage client cases within established deadlines.
