Immigration Legal Services Intern (Summer 2026)

About the role

The International Rescue Committee’s Immigration Legal Services Department in Silver Spring, Maryland, is seeking a Summer 2026 intern to support high‑quality, low‑cost immigration assistance for refugees and other clients. This role offers hands‑on experience with client intake, document preparation, and outreach in a humanitarian non‑profit setting.

Key responsibilities

• Review client immigration documents and help prepare them for consultations and application sessions.
• Answer client questions, refer them to appropriate staff, and provide special assistance to those with particular needs.
• Perform general administrative tasks such as tracking, filing, and mailing applications and notices of action.
• Update client information in the Lolly Law database under supervision.
• Assist with document translation, authentication, presentation, and completion.
• Promote the department through online and local networks and conduct research on immigration policies and programs.
• Help build partnerships with local agencies to improve service delivery.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in or within 12 months of completing a college degree related to international relief, humanitarian work, or refugee law.
• Passion for working with limited‑English‑speaking refugees; proficiency in Spanish is strongly preferred, with French, Dari, or Pashto a plus.
• Interest or prior experience in U.S. immigration law and outreach.
• Strong research, language, database management, and record‑keeping abilities.
