Hy-Chi Department Cook

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a Hy-Chi Department Cook in its Hy-Chi department. The cook prepares a variety of hot and cold foods using authentic cooking techniques and keeps the hot and cold cases stocked with freshly made product throughout the day. The role is fast-paced, with significant pressure to meet deadlines during the shift.

Key responsibilities

• Greet every customer with a smile and assist them with their needs throughout the store
• Prepare woks by cleaning with water, heating to the right temperature and adding oil
• Cook soups and meats, prepare vegetables and sauces with spices, and combine ingredients to complete dishes
• Place food in hot cases, monitor quantities and refill as necessary
• Fill the cold case with fresh-made food and prepare items for the next day after the shift
• Check rice as time permits and take customer orders at the Hy-Chi counter when needed
• Order product and supplies or notify the department head of needs
• Clean the work area thoroughly at the end of each shift
• Answer the phone promptly and provide friendly service to callers
• Pitch in with other tasks or special projects as they come up

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent; no prior experience required, as training is provided
• Commitment to Hy-Vee's mission and a genuine passion for customer service
• Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions and to work well as part of a team
• Ability to safely use sharp knives and blades, and to handle heat and burn hazards from cooking equipment
• Ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with DOT standards where applicable

Required skills

• Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
• Clear communication with customers and co-workers
• Proper food safety, sanitation and kitchen procedures

The position is reported to the Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers, Food Service Director, Hy-Chi Department Manager, Assistant Hy-Chi Department Manager and Service Managers. Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment drug screen.
