HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanic – Journeyman Position

About the role

We are seeking a Journeyman HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanic to join our facilities services team. The role focuses on preventative maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, air‑conditioning and refrigeration equipment in our central shop. The successful candidate will work independently and respond to on‑call emergencies as needed.

Key responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance tasks such as adding coolant, changing and adjusting belts, replacing air filters, and applying lubricants and chemicals (30%).
• Investigate and repair building air‑conditioning and heating systems, freezers, fans and related mechanical equipment with minimal supervision (30%).
• Recharge air‑conditioning systems with the correct amount of refrigerant and lubricant (10%).
• Install, replace, adjust and calibrate major refrigeration components including compressors, condensers, expansion valves, thermostats, coils and drive assemblies (10%).
• Overhaul and repair pumps, motors, control systems, piping and other equipment used in refrigerating and air‑conditioning systems (10%).
• Assist senior journeymen in troubleshooting and repairing control systems (5%).
• Perform on‑call and emergency work as assigned (5%).

Required profile

• Minimum two years of experience or training in installation and/or maintenance of heating, ventilating or air‑conditioning systems.
• Ability to lift 50 lb, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb ladders and stairs, and bend the back.
• Subject to drug/alcohol testing and may be required to remain on campus during emergencies.
• Valid driver’s license.
• EPA Section 608 Refrigerant Recycling and Recovery Certification.

Required skills

• HVAC preventative maintenance (coolant addition, belt adjustment, filter replacement).
• Refrigerant charging and handling.
• Installation and calibration of compressors, condensers, expansion valves, thermostats, coils and drive assemblies.
• Pump, motor and control system repair.
• Piping repair for refrigerating systems.
• Control system troubleshooting.
• EPA Section 608 certification.
• Valid driver’s license.
