Hazmat Technician

About the role

R+L Carriers has an immediate opening for a Safety Hazmat Technician in our Chicago, IL service center office. Reporting to the Director of Safety, the Hazmat Technician is responsible for tasks associated with emergency response, hazardous and non‑hazardous materials clean‑up, site remediation, equipment decontamination, handling of hazardous materials, and other duties as required.

Key responsibilities

• Lead safety in all aspects of emergency response, following R+L procedures, properly containerizing waste/re‑use products, completing safety documentation, and upholding high safety standards.
• Operate tools applicable to emergency response activities and audit incoming/outgoing hazardous materials shipments for compliance.
• Set up and participate in live training events to ensure personnel competency.
• Coach co‑workers on unsafe behaviors and participate in specialized scheduled projects as required.
• Inform management of job issues promptly and update job notes daily.
• Maintain physical fitness to lift up to 75 lbs in a high‑pressure, fast‑paced environment.

Required profile

• 40‑hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification (required).
• Wear proper personal protective equipment as required by OSHA and industry standards.
• Physically fit and able to lift 75 lbs.
• Ability to thrive in a high‑pressure, fast‑paced, team‑supported environment.
• Exceptional interpersonal, customer service, and problem‑solving abilities.
• Proven ability to work confidentially and handle multiple detail‑oriented tasks.
