Grocery Cashier (Checker)

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a cashier (checker) for its grocery store in Fairmont. The cashier provides fast, friendly service to customers, operates the cash register and handles packaging, drive-up and carry-out orders. Night and weekend shifts are required.

Key responsibilities

• Greet customers, learn their names and help them find products, load or unload heavy items and pass on their requests.
• Answer the telephone promptly and work with co-workers to keep the store pleasant.
• Scan products, redeem coupons and food stamps, issue rain checks, process cash, checks and credit cards, figure discounts, count back change and issue receipts.
• Package goods, give packages to customers and assist courtesy personnel.
• Follow local, state and federal rules on tobacco, liquor and lottery sales, and on WIC and food stamp eligibility.
• Stock, face and rotate merchandise, clean shelves, read shelf tags and know where items are located.
• Keep the register area clean, check register balances at the start and end of shifts, and report cash discrepancies.
• Review the weekly store ad for price changes and sales, and comply with hygiene and dress guidelines.
• Secondary duties include helping with store displays, changing register tapes, explaining code dates on perishables and assisting in other store areas.

Required profile

• No education or experience required.
• Able to do arithmetic with fractions, decimals and percentages and to follow written or verbal instructions.
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and 10 pounds constantly; vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet with or without correction.
• Willingness to work night and weekend shifts in a fast-paced environment.

What we offer

• Anticipated hourly starting wage of $11.41 to $14.00 depending on experience.
