General Merchandise Assistant Department Manager

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a General Merchandise Assistant Department Manager in Rochester. The role reports to the District Store Director, Store Manager and Assistant Manager of Health Wellness Home, Store Operations and Perishables, and supervises full- and part-time General Merchandise Clerks. It is a non-exempt position with daytime shifts.

Key responsibilities

• Provide prompt, friendly customer service, greet customers by name and help them find products, load items and handle special orders and complaints
• Price products, set and reset sales displays, maintain product knowledge and keep the department stocked, clean and well faced
• Receive and verify shipments, check product in, log invoices and assist with inventory
• Order product at GM manager's discretion, break down pallets and transport goods to the aisle
• Train new employees, supervise staff, assign work and act as department manager in their absence
• Follow sanitation and hygiene procedures, adhere to company policies and stay on time
• Handle customer and vendor issues daily, and be responsible for the department cash and merchandise purchases

Required profile

• High school education or one to three years of similar or related work experience
• Ability to solve practical problems, do arithmetic with fractions, decimals and percentages, and follow instructions
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and 20 pounds frequently, and to climb, balance, kneel, stand and walk
• Visual acuity from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet, with or without correction

Required skills

• Use of pallet jack, forklift, computer, telephone system, copier, fax and C.A.R.S. system
• Basic filing, copying and interviewing skills

The anticipated starting hourly wage is $18.00 to $22.50 depending on experience. Employment is contingent on a pre-employment drug screen. The work is fast-paced, with exposure to dust, noise, equipment movement hazards, electrical shock and occasional cleaning chemicals.
