Job description

About the role

Leidos' Defense Space Business Area is seeking an FPGA Engineer in San Diego, CA, to help build advanced sensor and space-related technologies supporting national defense missions. The role covers the full FPGA development lifecycle, from architecture and design through timing closure, integration and hardware testing, within a multidisciplinary team.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and test FPGA designs for chemical, biological, radiation, nuclear and space sensor systems for federal government customers.
  • Design and integrate DSP applications for SoC implementations such as Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ and Xilinx RFSoC.
  • Develop FPGA test plans, find root causes of test failures and propose design changes with senior staff.
  • Analyze, design and implement HDL test benches in VHDL and Verilog for code validation against models.
  • Synthesize, place and route designs meeting timing requirements, and design interfaces to common protocols (PCIe, 10GBE Ethernet, LVDS) and IP blocks (SERDES, PLLs).
  • Support electrical engineering activities including system integration and testing with CAD and lab work, and troubleshoot failed equipment.
  • Analyze data, write technical reports, and maintain design documents, functional requirements and interface control documents.

Required profile

  • BS and 5+ years of experience as an electrical or computer engineer in R&D, or a Master's degree with 3+ years of experience.
  • US citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance; an active clearance is preferred.
  • Experience testing FPGA or CPLD designs in a lab, and experience with cross-functional R&D teams.
  • Well-organized, reliable, good communicator, able to multi-task and work with minimal supervision.
  • Less than 20% travel to customer sites as required.

Required skills

  • Fluent in Vivado, ModelSim or Riviera, and in testbenches and self-checking verification.
  • Working knowledge of electronics test equipment (function generators, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies).
  • Familiarity with Git, JIRA, Agile and Scrum.
  • Nice to have: image processing in MATLAB, Microchip Polarfire and Libero, and experience documenting technical data packages for military products.

The pay range is $87,100 to $157,450.
