Food Service Aide II

About the role

Under direct supervision, the Food Service Aide II works as a lead worker in the University of Maryland dining facilities. The role involves preparing and serving simple menu items according to standard recipes, coordinating large-scale catering logistics, and maintaining sanitation and kitchen equipment. The position supports front-of-house teams during regular service and special events such as football Saturdays.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and serve menu items following established recipes and portion-control standards.
• Coordinate catering logistics, delivery, and expedite front-of-house service teams.
• Operate cash registers and handle barista duties as needed.
• Maintain sanitation, kitchen cleanliness, and equipment functionality.
• Assist with special campus events, including high-volume football Saturdays.
• Lift and transport food supplies (40 lb regularly, up to 75 lb occasionally) and work in extreme temperature conditions.

Required profile

• Minimum one year of food-service experience.
• Ability to work variable schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency closures.
• Must obtain and maintain ServSafe certification within 90 days of hire.
• Physical ability to stand, walk, and work on feet for long periods.
• Compliance with UMD, Prince George’s County, and state policies.

Required skills

• Working knowledge of food preparation methods and portion control.
• Familiarity with sanitation regulations and kitchen safety.
• Proficiency in operating food-service equipment and cash registers.
• Basic arithmetic, reading, and record-keeping abilities.
