Fleet Technician I

About the role

The Fleet Technician I provides maintenance, diagnosis, and repair services for a municipal fleet that includes cars, trucks, and off‑road equipment. The role requires a safety‑focused, customer‑oriented approach while working in the town’s public works shop and on‑site locations as needed.

Key responsibilities

• Perform maintenance, diagnosis, and repairs on cars, trucks, and off‑road equipment following manufacturer guidelines.
• Conduct emergency roadside repairs, breakdown assistance, and DOT inspections.
• Execute preventive maintenance tasks such as fluid changes, lubrications, brake service, and safety inspections.
• Fabricate and weld parts using MIG, stick welding and plasma cutting as needed.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least 4 years of experience as a vehicle or heavy‑duty truck technician.
• Valid driver’s license; CDL must be obtained within six months.
• Ability to pass DOT‑required physical, substance‑abuse, and background tests.

Required skills

• Engine, transmission, and clutch repair.
• Brake and suspension service.
• Hydraulic system maintenance.
• Electrical system diagnosis and repair on diesel and gasoline vehicles.
• MIG and stick welding, plasma cutting, and part fabrication.
• DOT vehicle inspection procedures.
• Operation of heavy equipment such as backhoes and trenchers.
