Field Tank Welder

About the role

CB&I's Storage Solutions business unit is hiring a Field Tank Welder in Alexandria, Minnesota. The welder lays out, aligns and welds fabricated, cast and forged components to build structural forms such as machinery frames, tanks, pressure vessels, furnace shells, buildings and pipe, following blueprints and metallurgy.

Key responsibilities

• Select pipe and other materials and equipment according to specifications
• Plan layouts, assembly and welding, applying knowledge of geometry, metal machining properties, weld shrinkage and welding techniques
• Use Gas-Metal Arc, Flux-Cored Arc, Gas-Tungsten Arc, Submerged Arc or Shielded Metal Arc welding processes
• Lay out, position, align and fit components; bolt, clamp and weld metal components of piping systems, plate, pipe and tube or structural shapes, in flat, horizontal, vertical or overhead positions, and tack weld assemblies
• Set up the welding unit, insert electrodes and start the power supply, then strike the arc and guide the electrode or gun to form the specified weld bead
• Apply filler rod, clean or degrease joints, repair broken parts, remove slag and spatter, preheat work pieces and cut metal plates or structural shapes
• Inspect welds for bead size and other specifications
• Load, transport and unload materials and tools, assist in lifting and positioning work pieces, perform minor tool maintenance and assist other mechanics
• Comply with safety and project rules, observe respiratory protection where required, and pass employer or standard tests to meet certification standards

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Previous years of experience in the field or a related area
• Ability to lift and carry 10-25 lbs, climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel and crouch occasionally, and to work standing 70% of the time

Required skills

• Arc welding (Gas-Metal Arc, Flux-Cored Arc, Gas-Tungsten Arc, Submerged Arc, Shielded Metal Arc)
• Applying basic mathematics to solve problems, planning work and selecting tools
• Visualizing objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings
