Fiber Optic Specialist (Fusion Machine)

About the role
The Fiber Optic Specialist will support R&D and production teams on the SPARC fusion machine by handling, splicing, testing and maintaining thousands of optical fibers. This on‑site, full‑time position works within a multidisciplinary group of technicians and engineers to ensure reliable fiber performance throughout the machine’s lifecycle.
Key responsibilities
- Handle, route, splice, test and repair thousands of fibers used in the SPARC fusion device.
- Integrate small mechanical assemblies (passthrough flanges, enclosures) alongside fiber work.
- Install composite or polymer wrappings for fibers and their housings.
- Train fellow technicians on proper installation, splicing, routing and measurement procedures.
- Develop and improve safety protocols for laser and fiber‑optic handling.
- Provide fiber solutions for both manufacturing and R&D needs.
Required profile
- Minimum 4 years of experience in fiber‑optic field applications.
- Proven ability to measure attenuation, insertion loss and perform spectral analysis using equipment such as OTDR, OSA, OBR and power meters.
- Hands‑on experience with fiber handling in a laboratory setting following industry standards.
- Bonus: 7 + years experience, work with distributed sensing arrays, polyimide‑coated fibers, and at least one year of teaching/training fiber‑splicing techniques.
