Extension Educator, Agriculture and Food Systems

About the role

The University of Maryland Extension seeks an Extension Educator to support the Talbot County Agriculture and Food Systems program. The role involves delivering educational programs, providing technical assistance, and fostering partnerships with local agricultural stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, promote, implement, and evaluate programs on agronomy, horticulture, livestock, small‑scale farming, and agribusiness management.
• Deliver workshops on crop production, integrated pest management, pesticide safety, nutrient management, financial management, and natural resource conservation.
• Provide training and recertification for private pesticide applicators and nutrient‑management voucher holders.
• Create and market Extension materials, including press releases, newsletters, and social‑media content.
• Develop grant‑funded projects and maintain relationships with local agricultural organizations and committees.

Required profile

• B.S. in agricultural education, agronomy, animal science, horticulture, agricultural business, or related field.
• At least three years of leadership or management experience working with farmers and community leaders.
• Valid driver’s license, personal transportation, and willingness to travel throughout the cluster and state.
• Ability to obtain Maryland nutrient‑management advisor certification and a Category‑10 commercial pesticide applicator license.

Required skills

• Proficiency with computer technology for educational programming and management.
• Plant diagnostic skills, including insect and disease identification.
• Knowledge of pesticide safety, handling, and certification processes.
• Experience with nutrient‑management planning and advisory services.
