Entry Level Mechanical Engineer – Ultrasound (Cambridge, MA)
Philips · Cambridge
Job description
About the role
The Mechanical Engineer will execute engineering requirements analysis, develop and validate test plans, and ensure regulatory compliance for ultrasound transducer products. Working under general supervision, you will document design specifications, implement improvements, troubleshoot hardware and software issues, and mentor junior team members.
Key responsibilities
- Design housings, acoustic stacks, interconnects, and mechanical interfaces that meet acoustic, ergonomic, and electrical integration requirements.
- Develop prototypes and collaborate with acoustic, electrical, and signal‑processing engineers to validate transducer performance; conduct mechanical tests that simulate acoustic coupling and environmental stresses.
- Select materials and adhesives that preserve acoustic properties; design packaging for acoustic isolation, cable routing, and connector durability.
- Incorporate design‑for‑manufacturability and assembly early; work with suppliers on tooling, molding, precision assembly, and support qualification and pilot builds.
- Lead root‑cause investigations for field failures and implement design changes to improve reliability.
- Prepare and maintain CAD models, BOMs, test procedures, verification reports, and manage component obsolescence.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, industrial, manufacturing engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience with medical devices, acoustic systems, or precision electromechanical products.
- Familiarity with medical‑device quality systems (ISO 13485) and design‑control processes is a plus.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design and reliability principles (DFSS, DFMEA, DFM, GD&T).
- Ability to work independently and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
Required skills
- Mechanical design using CAD tools (Creo/ProE, SolidWorks).
- Finite‑element analysis (Ansys Classic/Workbench).
- Reliability methodologies (DFSS, DFMEA, DFM, GD&T).
- Configuration‑management systems (Windchill, eMatrix, SAP) – optional.
- Hardware/software interface knowledge.
- Thermal modeling – optional.
- Materials, adhesives, and packaging design for acoustic applications.
