Engineering Technician V – Target Diagnostics Systems Operator

About the role

North Wind Services is seeking an Engineering Technician V to support target diagnostics for the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The role involves operating, configuring, and maintaining complex optical and electronic diagnostic systems in a high‑energy laser environment.

Key responsibilities

• Operate and maintain the laser experimental facility through a graphical user interface, including setup, alignment, testing, and documentation of diagnostic equipment.
• Configure, install, qualify, and calibrate diagnostics such as optical tables, oscilloscopes, cameras, power supplies, and trigger generators.
• Support data acquisition, recording, interpretation, and troubleshooting for NIF experiments, including timing, alignment, and data recovery.
• Work in radiological environments and adhere to safety, security, quality, and efficiency (SSQE) procedures.

Required profile

• AA degree in Laser & Electro‑Optics, Mechanical or Electrical Technologies, or equivalent experience.
• U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a DOE Q‑clearance.
• Willingness to work 12‑hour shifts, weekends, and alternate schedules in a 24/7 operational facility.
• Physical ability to work in confined spaces, lift 25 lb, and use ladders or scaffolding.

Required skills

• Experience with diagnostic instrumentation (oscilloscopes, interferometers, spectrometers, photometers, multimeters, power supplies).
• Proficiency in computer control and data acquisition systems.
• Knowledge of laser alignment, optical, opto‑mechanical and electro‑optical design.
• Competence with Microsoft Excel.
