Engineering Manager - Indirect Channel (Direct Connect API & Web)

About the role

Avis Budget Group is looking for an experienced Engineering Manager / Lead Architect to provide technical leadership for the architecture, engineering, modernization and operation of large-scale enterprise applications and API platforms. The role suits a technology leader with 15-17+ years of experience architecting and managing complex, distributed enterprise systems, with deep expertise in API-centric architectures, microservices, cloud platforms, GDS and legacy modernization. The candidate will lead the shift toward a modern, API-first, cloud-native architecture while integrating with existing mainframe, GDS, reservation, fleet, rental and enterprise systems.

Key responsibilities

• Define enterprise architecture strategies and reference architectures for microservices, APIs, event-driven systems, cloud platforms and enterprise integration, and lead architecture reviews across engineering teams
• Own the enterprise API strategy and govern API platforms (Apigee, 3scale, RedSwift), including design, governance, security, observability and SLAs/SLOs
• Lead GDS architecture and integration with reservation, rental, fleet and partner ecosystems, and modernize GDS and legacy integrations via API-first and event-driven approaches
• Modernize enterprise applications onto AWS (CloudFront, API Gateway, ECS/EKS, Lambda, S3, RDS, DynamoDB, ElastiCache, SQS/SNS) and establish hybrid-cloud integration with mainframe and data center environments
• Lead the transformation of monoliths into microservices using domain-driven design, Kafka and event-driven patterns, and set Java/Spring Boot engineering standards
• Lead mainframe and legacy modernization, including API façade and strangler patterns, while preserving business continuity
• Manage multiple engineering teams and technical leads, mentor senior engineers and architects, and work with Product, Enterprise Architecture, Infrastructure, Security, Data, DevOps and business stakeholders

Required profile

• 15-17+ years of experience architecting and managing complex, distributed enterprise systems
• Deep expertise in API-centric architectures, microservices, cloud platforms, GDS and legacy modernization
• Ability to influence architectural decisions across engineering organizations and lead teams behind business-critical platforms
