Engineering Manager - Global Digital Backend Services

About the role

Avis Budget Group is looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the design, development, modernization and delivery of scalable technology solutions across its digital and core rental platforms. The role combines hands-on technical leadership, engineering management, Java and microservices expertise, and mainframe modernization, and involves leading a team of engineers while partnering with architects, product leaders and other technology teams.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and mentor Java engineers, senior developers and technical leads, and coach them on architecture, design, code reviews and career development.
• Own engineering execution across multiple applications and services, and partner with Product, Architecture, DevOps, QA and Security teams.
• Establish engineering standards for code quality, architecture, testing, observability, security and performance, and drive Agile practices and continuous improvement.
• Design and develop Java-based, cloud-ready microservices with Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, REST APIs and event-driven architectures, and promote API-first development.
• Modernize monolithic applications into domain-oriented microservices, using asynchronous messaging, event streaming and distributed processing patterns.
• Integrate mainframe systems of record with modern platforms, defining modernization strategies and strangler-fighter approaches.
• Work with DevOps and Cloud teams on CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure-as-Code, automated testing, and observability via logging, metrics, distributed tracing and APM.

Required profile

• 10-12+ years of software engineering experience, with significant Java/J2EE development experience.
• Proven experience leading engineering teams as an Engineering Manager, Development Manager, Lead Engineer or Technical Lead.
• Experience with mainframe technologies and integration, and with modernizing legacy/mainframe applications.
• Relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL or DB2), messaging/event technologies (Kafka, MQ or similar), and CI/CD, DevOps and Agile/Scrum.
• Preferred: large-scale modernization program leadership, AWS/Azure production experience, Kafka, Kubernetes/OpenShift, Splunk/Datadog/Dynatrace, OAuth2/OIDC/JWT, and travel, transportation or rental-car technology experience.

The annual starting salary is $130,000 - $160,000, depending on geography, market, skills, education and experience.
