Emergency Department Registrar

About the role

The Emergency Department (ED) Registrar ensures that patients entering the ED are registered quickly, accurately, and with a focus on patient‑centered service. This position requires strong verbal and written communication, the ability to handle urgent situations, and a commitment to maintaining compliance with hospital and regulatory standards.

Key responsibilities

• Complete initial patient intake promptly, gathering personal and demographic information.
• Verify insurance benefits, obtain authorizations, and communicate financial responsibility to patients or guarantors.
• Collect co‑pays, deductibles, and provide out‑of‑pocket estimates for self‑pay patients when required.
• Obtain signatures, scan identification and coverage documents, and maintain confidential patient records.
• Register patients arriving by ambulance or other emergency transport, coordinating with medical staff for immediate care.
• Ensure compliance with Joint Commission standards and front‑end collections policies.
• Communicate clearly with patients, physicians, and hospital personnel, addressing inquiries and complaints.
• Oversee the waiting area to improve patient experience and assist during high‑pressure situations.
