Elevator Inspector – Chicago, IL

About the role

The Elevator Inspector will conduct trade‑specific inspections on elevators, escalators, mechanized walkways and related lift machinery in the Chicago area. The role ensures that construction, retrofit, repair and maintenance work complies with applicable codes, drawings, specifications and contract documents while maintaining safety standards.

Key responsibilities

• Perform code and quality‑control inspections on various phases of elevator and lift equipment.
• Detect defects or faults in installations, maintenance or operation and recommend remedial actions per jurisdictional requirements.
• Read and interpret equipment operation plans, blueprints and schematic drawings accurately.
• Use standard testing devices and methods to verify equipment meets established requirements.
• Coordinate work schedules with service companies and technicians to maximize operational efficiency.
• Work cooperatively with property managers, service companies and the public while adhering to safety practices.

Required profile

• Current Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI) certification or five years of elevator industry experience performing inspections, service, repairs or testing.
• Education in an engineering discipline may substitute for two years of field experience.
• Demonstrated knowledge of electric and hydraulic elevator systems, mechanical and electrical principles, and relevant safety codes (ANSI, Construction Code).
• Ability to interpret blueprints, schematics and code documents to identify violations and corrective measures.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel.
• Experience using Microsoft Access.
