Electrician - Shawnee Correctional Center

About the role

The Illinois Department of Corrections is hiring an Electrician for Shawnee Correctional Center in Vienna, Illinois. The position is full-time, hourly, and union-covered, with a schedule of 6:30am to 3pm Monday to Friday. It pays the prevailing rate of $9,702.24 to $10,236.42 per month ($55.76 to $58.83 per hour).

Key responsibilities

• Install and maintain electrical systems, including switchboards, panels, appliances, air conditioners and other apparatus.
• Repair and maintain electrical equipment and apparatus.
• Dress and polish commutators.
• Instruct and direct unskilled workers assigned to assist with tasks.
• Maintain adequate inventory of electrical supplies.
• Perform other duties within the scope of the listed duties.

Required profile

• Knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to a four-year high school education.
• Successful completion of a recognized electrician apprenticeship program and four years of full-time journey-level electrician experience, or eight years of full-time journey-level experience.
• Ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check and a drug screen.
• Ability to work at heights on ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts or elevated platforms with proper fall protection.

Preferred qualifications

• Five years of experience applying national, state and local electrical codes.
• Five years of experience reading blueprints, sketches and drawings, and estimating time, labor and materials.
• Five years of experience using voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters and other testing equipment.
• Five years of experience installing, maintaining and troubleshooting fire alarm systems, building automation systems and telecommunications work (data networks, cable TV, security cameras).
• Current OSHA 10 training or higher.
