Economic Empowerment Intern (Unpaid)

About the role

The Economic Empowerment Intern will support the Economic Empowerment Department in delivering workforce development and career services to IRC clients, helping refugees and displaced persons achieve self‑sufficiency through employment. This unpaid, on‑site internship in New Jersey offers hands‑on experience in case management, employer outreach, and job placement.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Workforce Development Team with a caseload of clients seeking employment.
• Conduct one‑on‑one meetings to set employment or education goals.
• Help clients develop resumes, cover letters, and interview skills.
• Track client interactions and progress in case notes and spreadsheets.
• Research local employment and vocational training opportunities in NJ.
• Identify additional services and refer clients to appropriate IRC programs.
• Maintain confidentiality and adhere to IRC privacy policies.

Required profile

• Prior experience in workforce development or social services with immigrants/refugees.
• Strong communication skills, able to work with clients of varied English proficiency.
• Commitment to confidentiality and client privacy.

Required skills

• Proficiency with spreadsheets for tracking case data.
