Disability Underwriting Director

About the role

The Disability Underwriting Director leads a team of underwriting consultants, providing coaching, guidance on workflow, procedures and resources. The role supports the department’s service level goals and contributes to the strategic vision of the underwriting function.

Key responsibilities

• Acquire, retain and develop IDI underwriting talent.
• Lead, mentor and coach disability underwriters in technical and professional skills.
• Drive continuous improvement and root‑cause problem solving.
• Collaborate with Compliance, Legal and underwriting partners on policy and regulatory issues.
• Perform trending and root‑cause analysis to identify gaps and recommend training or procedural changes.
• Maintain relationships with General Agents, advisors and brokerage directors to resolve escalations.

Required profile

• High School Diploma (Bachelor’s preferred).
• 7+ years disability underwriting experience.
• 2+ years leading or mentoring production underwriters.
• Residence within 50 miles of Springfield, MA and ability to work a hybrid schedule.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of medical, financial and occupational underwriting.
• Experience with trend analysis and root‑cause problem solving.
• Ability to partner with sales, product, marketing and compliance teams.
