Director of Science Policy

About the role

Rainmaker is building a modern precipitation enhancement system and needs a Director of Science Policy to lead its engagement with the federal science enterprise. This senior role will connect the company’s atmospheric research ambitions with funding agencies, Congress, and the broader scientific community.

Key responsibilities

• Own relationships across federal research agencies (DOE, NOAA, NSF) and build pipelines of funding opportunities.
• Develop and lead grant proposals, partnerships with universities and national labs, and legislative strategies to expand research funding.
• Maintain expertise on the statutory and budgetary landscape governing atmospheric research and craft briefing materials for congressional staff.
• Represent Rainmaker within the atmospheric science community, building coalitions and scientific validator networks.
• Coordinate field demonstrations and site visits for agency officials, congressional staff, and academic collaborators.

Required profile

• 5+ years in science policy, federal research administration, or government relations for a research‑driven organization.
• Advanced degree in atmospheric science, physics, engineering or related field (PhD preferred).
• Proven track record of winning competitive federal research proposals and deep knowledge of grant mechanisms.
• Existing relationships with federal science agencies, congressional science committees, and the atmospheric research community.
• Ability to operate as both strategist and hands‑on operator in a fast‑paced startup environment.
