Director of Facilities – Portland Campus

About the role

Northeastern University is seeking a Director of Facilities to lead maintenance and operations for its Portland, Maine campus. Reporting to the Associate Vice‑President of Facilities Operations, the role oversees an integrated facilities management provider and ensures campus systems operate efficiently and within budget.

Key responsibilities

• Define scope of work, evaluate contractor solutions, and approve action plans for building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, security, life safety).
• Develop and manage budgets, resource allocation, and reporting mechanisms for preventive maintenance.
• Oversee grounds maintenance, snow/ice removal, and general labor functions, coordinating both in‑house staff and contracted services.
• Lead a mixed team of full‑time and part‑time staff, fostering a customer‑focused service philosophy.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, or a related field.
• 10+ years of experience, including management of an outsourced or Integrated Facilities Management (IFM) contract.
• Proven ability to develop budgets, prepare financial reports, and ensure regulatory compliance.
• Experience interpreting building codes, university policies, and creating operating procedures.

Required skills

• Working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and life‑safety systems.
• Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (Archibus preferred).
• Experience using vendor performance dashboards and adopting new facilities technology.
