Director, Development Initiatives

About the role

The University of Miami Division of Development and Alumni Relations seeks a Director of Development Initiatives to lead strategic projects and events across Sylvester Development and Medical Development. This senior position supports the division’s vision, mission, and strategic plan.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate and staff donor cultivation events, press conferences, groundbreaking ceremonies, galas, and board meetings.
• Prepare, monitor, and control event budgets, negotiate contracts, and manage vendor relationships.
• Develop comprehensive project plans, timelines, and budgets; monitor progress and adjust to ensure successful completion.
• Maintain inventory of capital naming opportunities and collaborate with facilities and gift officers on donor recognition projects.
• Lead communication strategies, prepare status reports, and present updates to senior leadership.
• Ensure compliance with University policies, internal controls, and regulatory requirements.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree with at least 7 years of experience in development, major‑gift fundraising, or fundraising management, preferably in higher education or health care.
• Proven ability to motivate and engage donors, volunteers, prospects, and senior staff.
• Strong organizational, communication, and project‑management skills.
• Experience working in a large, complex, matrixed organization.
