Detention Officer (Male & Female)

About the role

The Detention Officer is responsible for the safe supervision of inmates within a correctional facility. This position ensures order, security, and the well‑being of both staff and detainees while adhering to established policies and procedures.

Key responsibilities

• Directly supervise male and female inmates, maintaining order and enforcing rules.
• Document incidents and actions in log books and electronic databases.
• Transport inmates to court, medical appointments, and other designated locations.
• Monitor and meet inmates' nutritional needs.
• Conduct searches of inmates, visitors, and cells to ensure security.
• Perform safety and sanitation inspections of the facility.
• Process and book new inmates according to protocol.
• Carry out additional duties as directed by supervisors.

Required profile

• U.S. citizenship.
• Minimum age of 21 years.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Completion of a jailer certification course or willingness to complete it within one year of hire.
• No convictions as defined by NCAC 10B, 0307.
• Pass a medical examination by a licensed physician.
• Good moral character and ability to undergo a thorough background investigation.
