Delicatessen Department Manager

About the role

Hy-Vee is looking for a Delicatessen Department Manager in Brookings to lead one of its most visited departments. The manager sets the standard for freshness, quality and customer experience, manages the team and oversees daily operations, from sales analysis and promotion planning to staffing and inventory.

Key responsibilities

• Set and uphold department standards for customer service, cleanliness, sanitation, team relations and profitability
• Encourage the team to greet and engage customers and lead by example
• Help customers find products, reach items and carry heavy purchases
• Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate employees, and handle performance and disciplinary matters
• Coordinate scheduling, daily work plans and department goals with store leadership
• Oversee ordering, replenishment, pricing, invoicing and department bookkeeping
• Analyze weekly and monthly sales trends, prepare ad projections and plan promotions and displays
• Keep product temperatures, storage and freshness standards to minimize shrink
• Troubleshoot equipment and coordinate maintenance, conduct inventory and manage pre-orders
• Maintain compliance with dress code, hygiene standards and company policies

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• One or more years of related work experience preferred
• Ability to lift, carry, push or pull 100 pounds or more and stand and walk on hard surfaces for long periods
• Ability to work in coolers or freezers and, where applicable, use pallet jacks, forklifts, knives and a baler or compactor

• Customer service and team leadership in a fast-paced food service environment
• Basic math, including fractions, decimals and percentages
• Clear verbal and written communication with customers, employees and vendors
• Discretion with confidential information such as compensation, sales data and inventory reports

The role is reported to the Store Director, Store Manager and Assistant Managers, and directs the deli employees. Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment drug screen.
