Corporate Counsel - Outside Sales and Services

About the role

The Home Depot is hiring a Corporate Counsel for its Outside Sales and Services area. The position represents the company in legal matters such as legal claims, regulatory issues and contract negotiations, with the goal of minimizing the company's legal exposure. It advises managers and other departments on legal issues and educates internal clients on ways to reduce risk.

Key responsibilities

• Budget management: compile, prepare and present budget recommendations for the area of responsibility and manage the budget.
• Legal matter management (about 40% of the role): handle legal matters, retain, monitor and evaluate outside counsel relationships and budgets, and conduct legal research for pending work.
• Negotiations (about 20%): independently conduct and direct negotiations for matters in the business area, under general supervisory review.
• Risk assessment and business guidance (about 30%): identify and assess risks, determine the appropriate course of action, and approve and recommend changes to business partners.
• Team supervision (about 5%): may supervise Legal Specialists and/or Legal Coordinators, including directing work, selection, termination, performance appraisals and coaching.

Required profile

• Age 18 or older and legally permitted to work in the United States.
• Preferred: Juris Doctor or equivalent and required certifications for practicing law.
• Preferred: 5 years of work experience, including 3 years in the practice area.
• Reports typically to an Associate General Counsel or Assistant General Counsel; may supervise others.
• Travel of less than 5% overnight; mostly sits in a comfortable indoor setting.
