Controls Engineer – Warehouse Conveyor Automation

About the role

The Controls Engineer executes control systems for advanced warehouse conveyor systems and works with cross-functional departments to improve operational efficiency, reliability and safety. The role sits under a Manager or Senior Manager of Controls Engineering and has no direct reports. It is listed as virtual but involves significant travel.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implementation (50%): lead or assist control systems design projects, delivering them on time, within budget and to specification and safety regulations.
• Collaboration (30%): work closely with operations, maintenance and IT to keep projects on schedule and within budget.
• Coding of control systems (20%): code control systems for conveyor and other automation solutions, and run feasibility studies and cost analyses for potential projects.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or a related field; master's degree preferred.
• 4+ years of experience in controls engineering focused on automation and conveyor systems.
• Ability to work overnight shifts and occasionally on weekends.
• Must be 18 or older and legally permitted to work in the United States.
• Typical requirements: overnight travel more than 50% of the time, and standing or walking continuously or lifting moderate-weight material.

Required skills

• In-depth knowledge of PLCs and SCADA systems and other control technologies.
• Experience implementing conveyor systems or replacing legacy conveyor systems in large-scale retail, distribution or enterprise environments.
• Familiarity with industry standards and safety regulations such as OSHA and ISO.
• Preferred: project management skills, ability to explain complex technical ideas simply, and use of Six Sigma or similar process-improvement methods.

Pay range for California, Colorado, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Nevada, New York City, Ithaca (NY), Westchester County (NY) and Washington residents: $80,000 - $150,000.
