Controller – Nonprofit Finance Leader

About the role

The Controller will lead day‑to‑day accounting operations for a behavioral health nonprofit, partnering closely with the CFO. This senior position oversees a small accounting team and ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance, and strong internal controls.

Key responsibilities

• Manage all core accounting functions, including general ledger, AP, AR, and payroll.
• Drive timely monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
• Maintain and enhance internal controls and accounting policies in line with GAAP and nonprofit regulations.
• Oversee financial data and reporting within the NetSuite ERP system.
• Prepare and review monthly financial statements, variance analysis, and supporting schedules.
• Provide accurate reporting packages to the CFO and senior leadership.
• Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of three accounting professionals.
• Coordinate the annual audit and act as primary liaison for external auditors.
• Ensure compliance with grant tracking, fund accounting, and other nonprofit reporting requirements.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA highly preferred.
• 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
• Prior supervisory or management experience.
• Hands‑on experience with NetSuite or a comparable ERP system.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
• Proven ability to manage financial reporting, audit coordination, and internal controls.
