Controller – Chicago

About the role

The Controller will lead all accounting and financial reporting functions for a fraternal benefit organization operating under Illinois regulations. This senior role ensures financial integrity, regulatory compliance, and stewardship of member assets.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee daily, weekly and monthly accounting activities, including bank monitoring, cash analysis, and disbursement reconciliation.
• Manage payroll processing, annuity tax payments, and maintain accurate records for claims, transfers, and employee benefits.
• Prepare journal entries, trial balances, financial statements, and regulatory reports for audits and compliance.
• Coordinate budgeting, forecasting, investment accounting, and reserve calculations across multiple financial institutions.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; CPA strongly preferred.
• 7–10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
• Experience with insurance, fraternal benefit societies, or other regulated financial entities.
• Strong knowledge of statutory accounting principles (SAP) and GAAP, plus familiarity with Illinois Department of Insurance regulations.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Sage accounting software.
• Proficiency with SOVOS financial reporting tools.
