Consumer Access Specialist (Part-Time, Day Shift)

About the role

AdventHealth is hiring a part-time Consumer Access Specialist on a day shift (Monday to Friday, 1pm to 5pm) in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. The role covers patient registration, insurance verification, eligibility checks, payment collection and coordination with clinical and ancillary departments.

Key responsibilities

• Perform Medicare compliance reviews and issue Advance Beneficiary Notices of Noncoverage as needed.
• Create accurate estimates for patient financial responsibility and collect payments or set up payment plans.
• Coordinate with utilization management staff on pre-authorization issues and ensure patients have the right logistical information.
• Contact insurance companies to verify eligibility and benefits and obtain pre-authorizations within timeframes.
• Register patients for all services accurately and minimize duplication of medical records.
• Collect demographic information from patients and confirm insurance details.
• Provide continuous coverage of assigned work areas, arrange relief coverage, and cover the switchboard as needed.
• Manage communication between clinical, ancillary and consumer access departments, document patient and insurance conversations, attend department meetings and provide excellent customer service.
• Perform cashiering functions such as collections and cash reconciliation.

Required profile

• High school graduate or equivalent (associate degree preferred).
• Bilingual English/Spanish.
• Customer service experience preferred; 1+ year of customer service, healthcare or revenue cycle experience preferred.
• Advanced understanding of insurance benefits and knowledge of EMR systems preferred.
• Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) or Certified Revenue Cycle Rep (CRCR) preferred.

Required skills

• Working knowledge of Microsoft programs and familiarity with database programs.
• Ability to operate general office equipment (computer, fax, printer, scanner).
• Understanding of HIPAA privacy rules and CMS/EMTALA guidelines.
• Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
