Consumer Access Specialist - Emergency Department

About the role

AdventHealth is hiring a full-time Consumer Access Specialist for its Emergency Department in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. The position covers Monday to Friday, 7am to 3:30pm, and handles patient registration, insurance verification, payment collection and coordination with insurance companies.

Key responsibilities

• Perform Medicare compliance reviews and issue Advance Beneficiary Notices of Noncoverage as needed.
• Create accurate estimates for patient financial responsibility and collect payments or set up payment plans.
• Coordinate with utilization management staff on pre-authorization issues and ensure patients have the right logistical information.
• Contact insurance companies to verify eligibility and benefits and obtain pre-authorizations within set timeframes.
• Register patients for all services, confirm insurance details and collect demographic information, keeping medical records accurate and avoiding duplication.
• Cover assigned work areas during shifts, arrange relief coverage, provide PBX switchboard support and perform cashiering and cash reconciliation.
• Document patient and insurance representative conversations, attend department meetings and promote positive team dialogue.

Required profile

• High school graduate or equivalent (associate degree preferred).
• 1+ year of customer service, relevant healthcare or revenue cycle experience preferred.
• Bilingual English/Spanish.
• Preferred certifications: Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) and Certified Revenue Cycle Rep (CRCR).
• Knowledge of CMS, EMTALA and HIPAA guidelines, and of insurance benefits and EMR systems.

Required skills

• Working knowledge of Microsoft programs and familiarity with database programs.
• Ability to operate office equipment such as computer, fax, printer and scanner.
• Customer service and insurance knowledge, with good attention to detail.
