Consumer Access Specialist - ED Weekend Nights

About the role

AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is hiring a full-time Consumer Access Specialist for its Emergency Department, working weekend nights from 7pm to 7:30am on Friday through Sunday. The role covers patient registration, insurance verification, payment collection and coordination with clinical and ancillary departments.

Key responsibilities

• Perform Medicare compliance reviews and issue Advance Beneficiary Notices of Noncoverage as needed
• Create accurate estimates for patient financial responsibility and collect payments or set up payment plans
• Coordinate with utilization management staff on pre-authorization and ensure patients have the right logistical information
• Contact insurers to verify eligibility and benefits and obtain pre-authorizations within timeframes
• Register patients for services accurately and minimize duplication of medical records
• Collect demographic information and confirm insurance details
• Provide continuous coverage of assigned areas during shifts, arranging relief coverage as needed
• Manage communication between clinical, ancillary and consumer access departments and document patient and insurer conversations
• Provide switchboard coverage, including answering phones and transferring calls
• Perform cashiering functions such as collections and cash reconciliation

Required profile

• High school graduate or equivalent (associate degree preferred)
• Bilingual English/Spanish
• 1+ year of customer service, relevant healthcare or revenue cycle experience preferred
• Preferred certifications: Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) and Certified Revenue Cycle Rep (CRCR)
• Additional licensure or certification may apply depending on the unit or state

Required skills

• Working knowledge of Microsoft programs and familiarity with database programs
• Ability to operate general office equipment (computer, fax, printer, scanner)
• Basic knowledge of medical terminology and understanding of HIPAA privacy rules
• Experience with insurance benefits and hospital EMR systems
