Construction Superintendent

About the role

The Construction Superintendent leads the planning, scheduling, and execution of carpentry projects that support the maintenance, renovations, and special exhibition construction at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Reporting to the Facilities Project Manager, this role ensures work meets design specifications while protecting the museum’s collections and visitor experience.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate with the Facilities Project Manager and Installation Design Department on project scope, timelines, and resource needs.
• Plan, procure, and manage materials, tools, and equipment, including purchase order requisitions and inventory tracking.
• Develop and adjust construction staff schedules to meet project deadlines and operational priorities.
• Oversee on‑site construction activities, minimizing disruption to museum operations and ensuring strict protection of art collections.
• Prepare detailed cost estimates for renovations and exhibitions, monitor budgets, and track expenses throughout the project lifecycle.
• Inspect work performed by museum carpenters and external contractors to ensure compliance with specifications, building codes, and OSHA safety regulations.
• Provide ongoing safety training and enforce labor agreement compliance for all construction personnel.

Required profile

• Proven experience directing skilled carpentry teams in a museum, institutional, or similar environment.
• Strong knowledge of building codes, OSHA safety standards, and museum‑specific protection procedures.
• Ability to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, and project documentation.
• Excellent communication skills for coordinating with multiple internal departments and external vendors.
