Construction Inspector II – Public Works

About the role

The City of Riverside is seeking a Construction Inspector II to join its Engineering Services Division within the Public Works Department. The incumbent will support a variety of public works, utility, water, and private development projects by ensuring work complies with plans, specifications, and city standards.

Key responsibilities

• Review and evaluate project plans and specifications for public works, water, utility, and private development projects.
• Inspect workmanship, materials, and construction activities for conformance with plans, specifications, and departmental regulations.
• Document progress, record material quantities, and perform routine field tests, including sampling for laboratory analysis.
• Identify and mark the location of structures, appurtenances, and utilities on plans and in the field.
• Monitor safety, environmental compliance (including NPDES), and address any violations.
• Communicate with property owners, upper‑level staff, and other city departments regarding schedules, hazards, and project impacts.
• Coordinate contractor payments and schedule service interruptions to minimize disruption.

Required profile

• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and engineering drawings.
• Experience inspecting public works or utility construction projects.
• Strong documentation skills and attention to detail for recording materials and work performed.
• Effective communication skills for interacting with property owners, contractors, and city staff.
• Knowledge of safety regulations and environmental compliance requirements.
