Communications Specialist – Strategic Advisor (Public Safety)

About the role

The Seattle Police Department is looking for a talented Communications Specialist to shape internal and external narratives, keep employees and the public informed, and support the department’s mission. Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute communication plans for major SPD initiatives.
• Write and edit content for internal messaging, newsletters, blogs, and social‑media channels.
• Collaborate with city departments and SPD units to tailor messaging to their needs.
• Manage SPD’s social‑media presence and public image.
• Advise leadership during crises and high‑visibility events.
• Work with local, national, and international media on daily and long‑term stories.
• Maintain relationships with external media partners while balancing transparency, privacy, and accountability.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Marketing, Public Relations or related field.
• Minimum five years of public‑relations experience, including writing, editing, and publishing in print and electronic formats.
• Exceptional storytelling and editing abilities.
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects in a fast‑paced environment.
• Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.

Required skills

• Experience with internal communications platforms such as SharePoint.
