Communications Associate (Temporary)

About the role

ProPublica is seeking a versatile Communications Associate on a two‑year temporary contract to help amplify the reach of its investigative journalism. The role will focus on building relationships with media outlets, handling inbound media requests, and supporting staff appearances to advance the organization’s public‑relations goals.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute PR campaigns for major investigations and local reporting initiatives.
• Pitch ProPublica journalists and stories to TV, radio, podcasts, print, online publications and newsletters.
• Respond to inbound media inquiries, schedule interviews, and prepare staff with talking points.
• Draft and distribute press releases on hires, initiatives and awards.
• Manage republishing requests and ensure compliance with ProPublica’s guidelines.
• Collaborate with the communications team on reader feedback and inbound messages.

Required profile

• At least three years of experience in communications, marketing or public relations, preferably in a news organization.
• Strong written and verbal communication abilities and solid news judgment.
• Experience crafting narratives from complex subjects and pitching to modern media channels.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines.

Required skills

• Proficiency with a content management system (CMS).
• Familiarity with media monitoring and reporting tools such as Meltwater, Cision or Muck Rack.
• Experience using database tools like Airtable.
