Communication Intern (UN Peacekeeping)

About the role

The United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations is seeking a Communication Intern to support the Security Sector Reform Unit (SSRU) within the Peacebuilding and Peace Support Office. The internship can be undertaken remotely, hybrid or onsite at the UN premises in New York and lasts for six months.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare a weekly SSR Media Briefing for a global audience of UN and partner experts.
• Draft and schedule communications materials for X (Twitter) and LinkedIn.
• Support the development, maintenance and content publishing of the SSRU website.
• Assist with the annual SSR Week communication campaign (June interns).
• Create short promotional videos on security sector reform.
• Organise photo banks, mailing lists and archival content.
• Provide communications, logistical and administrative assistance for SSRU events.
• Conduct research to enhance the SSRU’s generative AI tool (SALMA).
• Perform other duties as required.

Required profile

• Enrolled in or have completed a graduate programme, or be in the final year of a bachelor’s degree (or have completed it).
• Field of study closely related to communications, media, peacebuilding or international affairs.
• No prior professional experience required.

Required skills

• Social‑media content creation (X/Twitter, LinkedIn).
• Website content management.
• Basic video editing for short promotional clips.
