About the role

The Clinical Laboratory Assistant 1 provides essential support to technical and professional staff in clinical and research laboratories at the University of Miami. This full‑time, onsite position ensures smooth laboratory operations and accurate specimen handling.

Key responsibilities

• Receive, sort, accession, and verify patient specimens for testing.
• Transport specimens, process them (centrifugation, aliquoting, volume measurement) and communicate results promptly.
• Enter specimen and patient data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) with accuracy.
• Maintain laboratory logs, files, and inventory levels according to protocol.
• Perform routine equipment checks, minor troubleshooting, and maintenance.
• Coordinate send‑out specimens with external reference labs (e.g., Quest, LabCorp).
• Uphold confidentiality, HIPAA compliance, and safety/infection‑control standards.

Required profile

• High School Diploma or equivalent; no prior experience required.
• Ability to learn new procedures, technologies, and adapt to changing priorities.
• Strong teamwork, communication, and attention to detail.

Required skills

• Specimen handling, labeling, and processing (centrifugation, aliquoting).
• Proficiency with Laboratory Information System (LIS) and basic computer applications.
• Use of standard laboratory equipment and routine maintenance.
