Civil Engineer Trainee - District 9

About the role

The State of Illinois, Department of Transportation, is hiring five Civil Engineer Trainees for District 9 in Carbondale, Illinois. The position is a training role supporting highway improvement projects, with a hybrid schedule of 1 to 5 days per week in the office. It is a salaried, full-time union position.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in the layout, inspection and documentation of highway improvement projects in a training capacity.
• Provide accurate, timely layouts, measurements, computations and documentation of contract items and engineering items.
• Keep the supervisor informed of problems encountered or deviations made.
• Ensure inspected and designed items comply with specifications.
• Rotate to other bureaus within the district as part of the rotational training program.
• Perform duties in line with departmental safety rules and in a way that treats all employees fairly.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited college (including those expected to graduate within 12 months), or a current Illinois Engineer Intern Certificate, or a Professional Engineer license in Illinois, or a Structural Engineer license in Illinois.
• Minimum GPA of 2.0 (the text is cut off).
• Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis; the state does not sponsor visas.

• Anticipated starting salary of $4,631 per month, with a range of $4,631 to $6,323 per month.
