Chief of Police

About the role

The Chief of Police leads the Elkhart Independent School District Police Department, ensuring the safety of students, staff, and property. Reporting directly to the Superintendent, the role establishes security policies, enforces laws, and coordinates with external law‑enforcement agencies.

Key responsibilities

• Direct daily operations of the district police department.
• Develop, implement, and monitor security regulations and procedures.
• Supervise, evaluate, and recommend hiring or termination of police officers, security guards, and clerical staff.
• Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local statutes, including Texas Education Code and Texas Occupations Code.
• Coordinate emergency response and manage incidents involving violence or armed confrontations.
• Oversee use of district vehicles, firearms, communication equipment, and other security tools.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED.
• Texas Peace Officer license issued by TCOLE.
• Successful completion of training required by Texas Education Code 96.641 and Texas Occupations Code 1701.2633.
• Valid Texas driver’s license.
• Experience as a fully commissioned police officer with supervisory or command experience.
• Ability to maintain emotional control under stress and be on call 24 hours a day.
• Completion of initial chief training within two years of appointment.

• Use of security equipment such as alarm systems, handcuffs, and fire extinguishers.
