About the role

The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking a Chief Internal Auditor to lead its agency‑wide internal audit program in Springfield. This senior position reports directly to the Director and serves as the primary spokesperson for audit matters.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee a comprehensive internal audit program, including the Annual Audit Plan.
  • Act as the official agency spokesperson to entities such as the Auditor General, Governor’s Office, legislature, and Office of Management and Budget.
  • Determine audit scope in response to operational changes or new information.
  • Maintain accurate, objective, clear, and timely communications with management.

Required profile

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Four years of progressively responsible professional auditing experience.
  • Certified Internal Auditor by examination or Certified Public Accountant.

Required skills

  • Audit program development and oversight.
  • Strategic thinking and critical analysis.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
