Checker/Stocker

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a Checker/Stocker for its Cedar Rapids Drugstore #4. The role keeps the store running on two fronts: serving customers at the register and keeping shelves stocked and fresh. It is an hourly position with no education or experience requirements, and full training is provided.

Key responsibilities

• Greet customers, learn their names and give friendly, prompt service
• Scan products and process payments (cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC, rain checks, in-store charges, lottery)
• Count change, issue receipts and handle cash refunds or credit memoranda for returns
• Comply with WIC, food stamp and tobacco, liquor and lottery sales guidelines
• Bag or box merchandise, assist courtesy personnel and support drive-up and carry-out service
• Unload product, open containers, stock shelves and rotate merchandise to keep it fresh
• Know item look-up numbers, department numbers, features and weekly ad prices and sales
• Keep the register area clean, check supplies and verify register balances at the start and end of shifts
• Answer customer questions, stay alert to store safety and security, and help with displays and special projects

Required profile

• No education or experience required; training provided
• Ability to lift, carry, push or pull 100 pounds or more, and to stand and walk on hard surfaces for long periods
• Ability to work in coolers or freezers and to handle truck freight
• Operator certification for pallet jacks, forklifts or similar equipment must be completed before independent use
• Pre-employment drug screen required

• Arithmetic with fractions, decimals and percentages
• Following written or verbal instructions and working as part of a team
• Ability to operate material-handling equipment and, where applicable, use knives and blades safely
