About the role
The NYC Department of Finance is seeking a Business Tax Accountant to join the Business Tax Adjustments & Customer Service Unit. The role involves managing business tax accounts, reviewing returns, resolving billing issues, and ensuring compliance with New York City tax regulations.
Key responsibilities
- Review business tax returns, payments, and taxpayer accounts to identify discrepancies.
- Process account adjustments, including penalty abatements, credit transfers, and line‑item corrections.
- Generate correspondence and communicate with taxpayers via phone or e‑services.
- Perform account updates and resolve billing and payment discrepancies.
- Assist users in navigating e‑services and the Business Tax Collection System (BTCS).
- Conduct research on taxpayer accounts and support the unit’s compliance objectives.
Required profile
- Permanent civil service accountant title or proof of filing for Exam No. 6000 or 6500 (or comparable title eligible for 6.1.9 title change).
- Provide Employee Identification Number (EIN) when applying.
- Detail‑oriented, self‑motivated, and proactive with strong analytical abilities.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with the Assistant Director and team members.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Required skills
- Knowledge of New York City business tax laws and regulations.
- Familiarity with the Business Tax Collection System (BTCS) and e‑services platforms.
- Ability to interpret tax returns and perform accurate account adjustments.
