About the role
The Bridge and Lock Operator is responsible for safely operating movable drawbridges within District 61 of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. The position ensures compliance with Coast Guard regulations and DOTD policies while providing reliable service to marine and vehicular traffic.
Key responsibilities
- Operate power‑driven drawbridges (electrical vertical lift, hydraulic/electrical bascule, swing, pontoon, etc.)
- Train lower‑level bridge operators on safe procedures
- Prepare and maintain bridge logs documenting openings and closings
- Communicate with vessel operators via marine radio
- Conduct visual inspections and report mechanical or electrical issues
- Perform basic maintenance such as lubrication, fluid checks, and oil changes for emergency generators
- Document marine and vehicular collisions and damages
- Maintain cleanliness of the bridge house and surrounding grounds
- Assist with emergency or disaster support activities as needed
Required profile
- No prior experience or formal training required
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
- Physical fitness to perform manual tasks and stand for extended periods
- Strong attention to safety regulations and procedural compliance
- Effective communication skills for interaction with vessel operators and team members
