Biosafety and Chemical Safety Officer

About the role

The Biosafety Officer/Chemical Safety Officer supports the Vice President for Research by managing laboratory safety programs in biosafety and chemical safety at Texas A&M University‑San Antonio.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and coordinate comprehensive biosafety and chemical safety programs to ensure compliance with university, system, and federal regulations.
• Serve on the Institutional Biosafety Committee, IACUC, and chair the Chemical Safety Committee, providing expert guidance on compliance matters.
• Conduct field audits, prepare reports, and liaise with regulatory agencies and the system office.
• Maintain safety signage, spill kits, and oversee hazardous waste removal and disposal.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or Occupational Health & Safety).
• Four years of related experience, with preferred additional certifications such as CBSP, RBP, CIH, CSP, or CHMM.

Required skills

• Strong computer proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
• Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
• Knowledge of biological and chemical regulations, including federal biosafety level guidelines.
