Biosafety and Chemical Safety Officer

About the role

The Biosafety Officer/Chemical Safety Officer supports the Vice President for Research by organizing, managing, and maintaining laboratory safety programs in biosafety and chemical safety at Texas A&M University‑San Antonio.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, implement and coordinate comprehensive biosafety and chemical safety programs to ensure compliance with university, system, federal and state regulations.
• Serve on the Institutional Biosafety Committee, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and chair the Chemical Safety Committee, providing expert guidance on compliance matters.
• Deliver training, conduct field audits, prepare reports, and liaise with regulatory agencies and the university compliance office.
• Maintain safety signage, spill kits, autoclave and hood testing, and manage hazardous waste disposal and incident response.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or Occupational Health & Safety).
• At least four years of relevant experience; preferred candidates hold certifications such as CBSP, RBP, CIH, CSP or CHMM.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to maintain confidentiality.

Required skills

• Strong computer skills, including proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
• Knowledge of biological and chemical regulations, federal laboratory biosafety level guidelines, and emergency response procedures.
